Substance Abuse and Mental Disorders Clinical OverviewDrug rehabilitation programs and those designed for the treatment of emotional-behavioral and other co-existing conditions have historically been separate or distinct facilities. Young men entered formally or informally diagnosed as either having one problem or the other--but not both (dual diagnosis). In the late 1970s, practitioners began to recognize the presence of substance abuse in combination with mental disorders had profound and troubling implications for treatment outcomes. Subsequent research in the field typically revealed that 50 to 75 percent of young adults receiving chemical dependency treatment also had a co-occurring disorder. Conversely, mental-health treatment programs reported 20 to 50 percent of their young adult patients also had significant issues related to drug abuse. Thankfully, the growing body of evidence combined with cries across the drug rehab and mental health communities regarding spiraling relapse rates for dually diagnosed individuals have gradually induced a mandate for change to more integrated treatment. In spite of these promising developments, young men needing drug rehab and/or treatment for mental illness commonly appear at programs not prepared to treat them.
