Drug and Alcohol Rehab in Taos, New Mexico

Recovery from substance abuse and mental illness is challenging under the best of circumstances. Often overlooked or minimized in the process of determining the right program is the treatment center location and the overall recovery environment. The treatment industry is littered with programs promoting beaches, world-class facilities, adventure sports and curriculums that resemble something more like exotic travel destinations, than treatment centers. This is not to say that some of these nice-to-have attributes shouldn't be part of a good program, but it should raise important questions about how they contribute to tuition costs, programming, and treatment outcomes.

  • How does the location and treatment environment recognize and support the unique needs of developmentally delayed/immature young adult males? If located in an urban and/or college environment, how does the higher risk environment ensure safety and deter relapse?
  • If a young adult is resistant to treatment, how does the physical location either deter or encourage a student's desire (and legal right) to leave before successfully completing treatment?
  • Does the program location offer participants the opportunity to progress from sites offering more structure, supervision and support to less as results demonstrate?
  • How does the program location(s) contribute to fair and reasonable tuition?

Taos, New Mexico: Perfect Location for All of the Right Reasons

Over a decade ago, Taos, New Mexico was selected from many possibilities as the home of San Cristobal Academy Alcohol & Drug Rehab Treatment Center.  Great consideration went into finding the ideal location that would fit the needs of young adults, the treatment model, and the founder's goal of providing the best treatment possible at the most affordable cost. From its inception SCA was (and still is) focused only on the complex needs of dually diagnosed young adult men between the ages of 17 and 26. Both the age group and the illnesses being treated mandated longer-term rehabilitation in an environment providing for step-down care as students demonstrated sustained progress with their treatment objectives.

The program is set-up with three distinct facilities. Upon enrolling, a student starts in Phase I which is located in the foothills of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains about 10 miles north of Taos in North-Central New Mexico. The property includes 130 beautiful acres of forest land adjoining thousands of national forest. The Phase I property also includes SCA's administrative offices, Phase I ranch house, and horse stables. Phase I was located and designed in a way to meet the needs of young adults early in the recovery process incorporating the right mix of structure and support, but yet in an inspiring and motivational environment.

Phase II housing is located in the tiny village of San Cristobal just a few miles from the main ranch property. Movement from one phase to another provides students a sense of growth and accomplishment accompanied with more responsibility and independence.

Phase III is a major move into SCA's townhome facilities located in the town of Taos. Graduation to Phase III is a big step and recognizes major milestones in each young man's recovery. Taos itself is a modest urban environment with a permanent population of around 6,500 people. The in-town location provides students the opportunity to fully demonstrate their commitment to recovery and practice adult decision making.

Having a perfect location that leverages our carefully engineered treatment program wasn't luck or afterthought--it was part of the design and plays an important role in the effectiveness of our curriculum and programming. We invite potential students, parents and referral sources to come and see for yourself.
